Durmitor, with its great peaks and beautiful nature, promises great relaxation. Our two-day journey to the mountains was planned differently than that in the beginning because we were supposed to stay in that area for a week. Despite that fact, the two days were also great for sightseeing.
Because we were previously ill, we couldn’t go to every peak we planned, so we chose to go where we could. On the first day, we started Durmitor’s exploration by visiting Black Lake. You can get there by car or walk about 15 minutes from the center of Zabljak. The tax for entering the Black Lake area is 5 euros per person. We found out later that there is another path that goes to Black Lake from the center of Zabljak through the forest.
The surroundings around the lake are not just great; they are breathtaking and perfect for sitting and relaxing. There are many wooden benches nearby, inviting you to take a moment and soak in the beauty of nature.
If you are an explorer, there is a forest path that goes around the two lakes and is about 7km long. The other lake is smaller and behind the main Black Lake. At the beginning of this trail, you will see marks of the Tito cave. The path that goes through the forest is well preserved for the first 2 km, but later, you will go through some rocks and not-so-wide paths.
For lunch, we visited the lounge bar Cudna Suma in the center of Zabljak. We chose this lounge bar because other restaurants didn’t have a place to sit. The atmosphere inside was relaxing and quiet, and the food was great.
Because we couldn’t hike much, we researched and found the attraction, the Durmitor Ring. The Durmitor Ring is a circle ride of 76km in which you will enjoy viewing Durmitor peaks. We planned to go there on the first-day afternoon, but the rain and thunder stopped us. The advice is always to postpone going to some peak or open space in the mountain if you see dark clouds and thunder.
On the second day, we went to the ski slope Savin Kuk. We thought about going by cable car uphill, but when we saw that it was slow, we changed our minds. The hiking to the Savin Kuk I cable car station is about 2.7km with a 400m elevation. The hike is not easy, and many people take cable cars and later walk downhill. It is great to hike because you can stop at any moment and enjoy the surroundings. The path to Savin Kuk is wide and a little steep, but with slower hiking, anyone can go there. Another great option is, of course, a cable car.
We planned to go to the highest point we could because of the beautiful view of the landscape. The path that later goes from Savin Kuk I station to Savin Kuk Peak is technically harder. We decided not to try going uphill to Savin Kuk Peak because of the clouds and the wind that started. When you go to some peaks, it is better to hike early in the morning. The rain skipped us, and downhill was a lot easier and faster.
After hiking, we decided to drive through the Durmitor Ring. We only went part of the circle path because the first 20km only had great landscapes and peaks. There are many viewpoints where you can park the car and check the view. Many points are also starts for mountaineers when they go to some peaks.
You can take a look at the video about the Durmitor Ring on my YouTube channel.
The most beautiful scene for me was Sareni Pasovi, which has a strange landscape texture that reminds me of paths or tree branches. The horses and cows made the nature scenes even more great and natural.
Some of these places are great recommendations when you go to Durmitor and don’t have more time or strength to go hiking. For just two days, we managed to see some of the beauty of Durmitor, but we hope that we will go back there one day for proper hiking.
