Where Is Mali Dunav Near Belgrade?
The Mali Dunav Center is located near Vinča, within Ogledno dobro Radmilovac. It is situated close to the Danube River, about 15 km from Belgrade.
Despite being located so close to the city center, Mali Dunav feels surprisingly peaceful and untouched by urban life. This makes it an ideal destination for a short escape into nature without leaving the Belgrade area.
History of Mali Dunav
Mali Dunav is a natural branch of the Danube River. Historically, the surrounding land was important for agriculture thanks to the rich alluvial soil created by seasonal flooding. Over time, the development of orchards, vineyards, and cultivated fields transformed Ogledno dobro Radmilovac into an important agricultural research estate.
Besides agriculture, local communities used the area for fishing and transport, while the wetlands supported diverse plant and animal life.
Today, Mali Dunav represents one of the preserved fragments of the original Danube floodplain landscape near Belgrade.
The Mali Dunav area as a peaceful natural oasis was gradually created through restoration work carried out by researchers and students from the University of Belgrade Faculty of Agriculture around 17 years ago.
What to See Around Mali Dunav
Along the riverbanks, visitors can see calm water channels surrounded by reeds and wetlands, which are home to various bird species. It is common to spot ducks, herons, and other water birds resting or moving slowly along the shore.
One of the main landmarks in the area is Ogledno dobro Radmilovac, known for its vineyards, orchards, and open views of the Danube River floodplain. At Radmilovac, visitors can enjoy peaceful countryside scenery and observe local wildlife in a natural environment.

Wildlife at Mali Dunav
Birdlife is especially noticeable in this area. Visitors can often see ducks, herons in this area. Around and in the water you can see frogs and turtles.
In the part of the aquarium you can see some of the domestic fishes that are in the river of Danube.
As for the domestic animals you can see peacocks, ducks, geese and sheep.
Among the many small animals, a couple of friends caught our attention. A bull and a horse were enjoying the visitors’ attention and some cabbage. It was funny how the bull allowed the horse to play with him by nibbling his ear. If you visit this place make sure to bring a little cabbage with you to make friends with the sheep, horse and the bull.
Although not a large wildlife reserve, Mali Dunav offers a rare opportunity to experience biodiversity so close to the city.
Things to Do at Mali Dunav
When looking at the visitor map, you will notice that there are many different attractions and activities to explore at Mali Dunav.
Visitors can see parrots and other domestic birds, as well as a small zoo area with sheep, bulls, and horses. There is also a small peninsula where baby sheep and rabbits can be seen in a peaceful natural setting.
In another part of Mali Dunav, there are experimental lakes where visitors can hear frogs and observe small fish in the water. In this area, it is also possible to take a ride in a small boat and enjoy the calm surroundings.
One of the most interesting places is the small wooden house located in the middle of the lake, called “Land of Evolution.” Although it was closed during our visit, from a distance it looked like a small hobbit house surrounded by nature.
Fishing is another popular activity at Mali Dunav. Information about boat rides, fishing licenses, and fishing equipment can be found on the official website. It is important to note that fishing for large carp and catfish follows a “catch and release” policy.
Mali Dunav is also a great place for a picnic, with many shaded areas where visitors can sit, relax on the grass, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere away from the city.
Besides nature and animal life, visitors can explore the “Prehistoric Fishermen’s Settlement”. This is an educational area featuring caves, huts, and traditional houses that recreate the way ancient fishermen once lived. The installations include tools, household objects, and reconstructed living spaces inspired by prehistoric times.
After exploring the area, visitors can also take a short break with a coffee to go. Near the entrance, there is also a cafe and public toilet available for guests.
How to Get There from Belgrade
Mali Dunav is located about 15–20 km from the center of Belgrade. It is a natural sanctuary near Ogledno dobro Radmilovac in the Grocka municipality.
The easiest way to reach Mali Dunav is by car. Depending on traffic, the drive from central Belgrade usually takes around 25 to 35 minutes. Free parking is available near the entrance.
Visitors can also reach the area by public transport. Several bus lines from Belgrade connect to the Grocka area. Reaching Mali Dunav may require a short walk or a taxi ride from the nearest bus stop.
Because the area is still relatively undiscovered, it is recommended to use GPS or map navigation.
Travel Tips for Visitors
If you plan to visit Mali Dunav, it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes. This is important especially if you plan to walk around the lakes, wetlands, and natural areas. During spring and summer, visitors should also bring sunscreen, water, and insect repellent, since parts of the area are surrounded by vegetation and water.
The best time to visit Mali Dunav is during spring and early autumn, when temperatures are pleasant and nature is at its most colorful.
Free parking is available near the entrance, while coffee and basic refreshments can be found inside the complex. Souvenirs can also be bought at the entrance, and the prices are affordable. Toilets and resting areas are available free of charge for visitors.
