Introduction to Zasavica
Among the many beautiful places to visit in Serbia, Special Nature Reserve Zasavica stands out as a true hidden gem. Zasavica is a perfect destination for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone looking to slow down and reconnect with the environment.
Located only about 100 km from Belgrade, the reserve is an excellent option for escaping the hustle and noise of the city.
History of the Special Nature Reserve Zasavica
The idea of protecting Special Nature Reserve Zasavica began in the 1990s. Environmental activists recognized the importance of preserving this unique wetland ecosystem. In 1997, the area and its riverbanks were officially placed under state protection as a Category I natural asset. This protection ensures the long-term conservation of its landscapes and wildlife.
Just a few years later, in 2001, Zasavica became a member of the EUROPARC Federation. This membership highlighted Zasavica’s importance as a priority site for preserving wetlands and rare animal species across Europe.
In addition to protecting wetlands and wildlife,Zasavica also plays an important role in preserving traditional domestic animal breeds from Serbia. Visitors can see rare species such as the mangulica pig, Podolian cattle, and the Balkan donkey. They all were once at risk of disappearing.
Thanks to conservation efforts within the reserve, the staff now successfully protect these animals, and they have become one of Zasavica’s most recognizable symbols.
Special Nature Reserve Zasavica is also a place where legends come to life. According to local stories, long ago dragons shaped the landscape of this area, while generations of people changed the course of the river. In that way, through persistent work, they made the land fertile and suitable for life.
Natural Features and Landscape
The Special Nature Reserve Zasavica is located in southern Vojvodina, near the historic town of Sremska Mitrovica. This peaceful wetland landscape feels like a hidden natural oasis, far from busy roads and city noise.
The reserve stretches along the calm Zasavica River and connects underground with the mighty Danube River, which helps maintain its rich ecosystem throughout the year. Thanks to its rivers, marshes, and lush vegetation, Zasavica remains one of the last well-preserved wetland areas in Serbia and offers visitors a perfect place to experience untouched nature up close.
Throughout the year, the landscape changes its character—from fresh green vegetation in spring and lively bird activity in summer to warm golden colors in autumn—so every visit offers a slightly different experience.
Animal Life in Special Nature Reserve Zasavica
One of the highlights of visiting Special Nature Reserve Zasavica is the opportunity to discover its rich and diverse animal life. The wetlands provide an ideal habitat for many species of birds, making the reserve especially attractive for birdwatchers and nature photographers. Visitors can often spot herons, storks, ducks, and many other water birds living among the reeds and quiet river channels.
Zasavica is also home to several interesting mammals, including the European beaver. Experts reintroduced the European beaver to the area after it had disappeared from this region for many years.
Friendly Balkan Donkey
In addition to rare wild species, the reserve is primarily famous for the preservation of indigenous domestic breeds. Upon entering the reserve, a Balkan donkey will greet you. In the past, people kept the Balkan donkey as a hardy domestic animal and used it for transport and farm work across the Balkan countryside. Also, he was a faithful companion of people on long journeys. Today, it represents a protected species and peaceful and sociable character. This breed is an important part of the preservation of traditional domestic animals and contributes to the production of medicinal donkey milk.
Donkeys often approach visitors and enjoy attention. You can even feed them carrots purchased at the entrance.
During a walk through Zasavica, you can see goats, black and sable cows and Bosnian mountain horses that graze freely in the spacious meadows. It was a peaceful and interesting experience to walk in their space and absorb nature.
We just watched the horses with admiration because they are not in the mood for petting. They naturally behave as free-spirited animals. We respectfully bypassed the cows and bulls, due to their grandiose size.
Another thing that I liked in this oasis is observing the behavior and mutual communication of animals. You feel calm watching the animals resting with their cubs, monitoring cubs movements, horses defining their territories among themselves, donkeys approaching and asking for attention. We even experienced a family of donkeys following us, until they found an interesting field for a meal.
Visitor Routes and How to explore Special Nature Reserve Zasavica
For the best experience, we reccomend to start your visit at the main entrance visitor center. There you can get maps, buy tickets for boat tours. Also, you can learn more about current routes and seasonal activities available during your stay.
You can explore Special Nature Reserve Zasavica along an easy sandy path of about 2 km that passes through meadows. We visited a longer route of about 4 km. If you come when the sun is strong, advice is to wear a cap or hat and bring water. At the end of the hiking trail, in front of the restaurant, we climbed the stairs to the tower. From the tower, you will have a view over the entire field of the reserve.
If you are a fan of boating, you can spend up to an hour riding along the Zasavica River and through the most beautiful parts of the swamp.
The reserve can also be explored by bicycle, which is a great option for visitors who want to cover a larger area at a comfortable pace while enjoying the peaceful landscape. Several viewpoints and resting spots along the way make it easy to stop, take photos, and simply enjoy the surroundings.
Regardless of which form of visit you choose, it is good that there is something for everyone. This is important because every age visitor can enjoy this nature. I would also like to emphasize that I appreciate the fact that the reserve is ecological. All the vehicles used are electric, and employees are transported by bicycle.
Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to explore the reserve, especially for birdwatching and photography. At that time, wildlife activity is at its highest. The atmosphere is particularly quiet and relaxing.
Local Products and Gastronomy
After a few hours of activities, we visited the restaurant Bircuz kod dabra, where you can enjoy food made from local products. Visitors can taste homemade sausages, dried meat specialties, and other authentic local delicacies prepared in a traditional way.
Another unique product of the reserve is donkey milk, which has become one of Zasavica’s most recognizable specialties. People value donkey milk for its nutritional benefits and use it to produce rare donkey milk cheese and cosmetic products. Visitors can purchase many of these items as souvenirs or order them online via the Zasavica website.
Why visit Special Nature Reserve Zasavica
The whole visit took us about 2-3 hours. We decided to visit this reserve at the last moment and it really suprised us. It is definitely recommended for tours. It was wonderful for me that for the first time I was surrounded by so many animals in a wide field.
It is an ideal destination for families, couples, photographers, and anyone looking for a relaxing day in nature not far from Belgrade. Even a short visit leaves a strong impression and makes you want to return again.
